Dive Into Summer Reading: Great Books for Toddlers and Preschoolers

Book reading can be an engaging and fun way to learn a variety of communicative skills! Reading is a good way to encourage a variety of skills such as joint attention, socioemotional learning, and discourse. In addition, reading allows for the acquisition of vocabulary, grammar, and a wider variety of communicative concepts. Because the benefits of books can stretch into so many different areas, here are some great books to get involved with summer reading fun by category:

  • Little Green Peas: A Big Book of Colors by Keith Baker
    This book includes objects of varying colors, in a variety of concepts! Great for teaching color attributes, adjectives, etc. When reading with your child, you can model what you see with phrases, such as “Look! A blue boat”, while pointing to specific objects. Using questions, such as “Where is the ___”, or “Show me the __”, can also target for receptive language understanding!
  • Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown
    This book is a wonderful introduction to the world of rhyming. In addition, this book can be used as a way to introduce a nighttime routine. You can even read this book with your child before bed as a start to your own nighttime routine!
  • The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
    This book is considered a timeless classic by many. It describes the adventures of a hungry caterpillar and the variety of foods he eats in a wonderfully illustrated way. Parents can target food vocabulary, plurals, sequencing and describing during story time in order to stimulate language with their child! This book provides flaps to utilize tactile means to show children what is going into the caterpillars belly!

Check your local library’s website for free access to online books for at-home use! In addition, many libraries offer limited hours and curbside pickup for safe summer reading.
