Successful & Naturalistic Carryover

Most patients are coming in for speech and language therapy for a total of an hour or maybe even less a week. Successful implementation of carryover exercises are extremely important to overall client success! Below are some helpful ideas and tips to ensure that carryover at home is naturalistic. Overpractice so that the child is hyper-aware of therapy goals, spelling out errors so that a child is thinking about what errors they are making, and shortening productions to help encourage naturalness. A patient may want to create a script in therapy and practice it at their favorite restaurants. Use carryover phrases to practice ordering different items at a grocery deli, talk about tv shows and movies that you watch at home daily with friends and family members. These more natural therapy tasks will help to improve natural carryover.
